‘A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.’
After my last post about the changes coming to this website, it is now time to reveal one of the two projects I’ve been mentioning.
That’s right! I have TWO new projects to announce and I’ll be honest, I’m really excited about both! (But also terrified.)
However, this does mean that the website will look very different from today onwards. (With regards to my short stories: read my last blog here for a way to keep them. Mind, any bookmarked links will still work.)
The reason being: I am moving away from fantasy and science fiction…
I know… A big step. A huge step. And I admit it is a scary one. So far sci-fi and fantasy have been all I’ve known in my writing life, so switching genres really feels like – is – a giant leap into the unknown.
And yet I know it’s a leap I need to take. More on that another time, I’m sure.
Plus the new genre itself isn’t an unknown to me.
What does it mean for this website? It means that for now there will be no further short stories posted here. But I will keep you updated on my progress and write blogs.
Why switching genres? There are a couple of reasons, but the main one is the current world we live in.
In my stories, I try to incorporate some of my personal beliefs about the world. In today’s, that feels more important than ever.
However, I kept feeling a sort of writer’s block, if you will. I would finish a story, but had trouble putting it out into the world, afraid of having missed an important aspect of a specific societal issue. This doubt stayed with me throughout the year.
I knew that I had to investigate these emotions and behaviours and finally after many months and many abandoned stories, projects and ideas, I concluded that fiction is not the right format for me to share beliefs that are important to me. In fiction, you don’t want to come across as preachy. But at the same time they are part of who I am. So I never felt I struck the right balance in my fiction.
It was a rough conclusion to come to. I love world building and I love thinking of a plot that will have the most subtle impact on an issue of importance to me. Aside from research for science fiction stories costing me a lot of energy and time, I was too unsure and without confidence about whether I had hit the right note or was completely off regarding these issues. The worry about that in particular has made me decide to abandon the genres I so love.
Now, my fiction is going to be a bit little less ‘change the world’ and a lot more ‘entertainment and characters’. At least, that’s the plan!
And thus I suddenly find myself writing a murder mystery novel!
And I am absolutely loving it!
But don’t worry, you might even see some of the beliefs I hold dear still pop up in my fiction in a different way. After all, a leopard can’t change its spots!
See you again soon for another announcement on my second project!
Lots of love,
